For all commercial vessels over 50' in length, please inquire with us about pricing for zinc replacement.
In the event that you may need an entirely new zinc installed which causes the need for any form of fabrication such as the drilling of a new mounting hole in a Sturt of trim tab, prices will vary, and we can discuss this after being explained the task. Please inquire with us.
What is a zinc?
A zinc is a sacrificial anode. It is was electrolysis in the water is attracted to and erodes before the metal running gear it is attached to, such as: your Shafter or rudder or strut or thrusters.
How do I know when I need to change my zincs?
You can research it online, but the norm is replacing zincs once they get to about 40-50% of their of life left. At this point the zinc is not offering much protection. Most experts would say to replace them as they decline from 50% of their life left.
How do I know what type of zincs I have or how many ?
If you don't know, that is ok. That is partially why we offer zinc inspections. When we do a zinc inspection, we take and inventory of the size, types, and numbers of each. The customer does incur the cost of the inspection based on the prices above, under zinc inspections.
What if I know what zincs are on my boat and the size and number of each?
That's great, that'll help you save some money! If you know the size, type and number of each, you can hire us just to change them without having to have us do an inspection and incur the inspection cost. However, if a second dive is required because the customer gave us the wrong information and we have to come back with the right zincs and dive again, we will impose the zinc inspection fee as priced above for the appropriate configured vessel.
How much do zincs cost?
That a loaded question. Zincs can range from $7-$70 depending on their size, material (some are zinc and some are aluminum), and style. The average cost is often between $19.99-$47 retail without tax.
How long does it take you to change the zincs?
Once it is scheduled, our in-water time can be anywhere from 20 minutes - 2 hours. It depends on the boat and number of zincs needed replacing. If it's a sailboat with a simple shaft zinc and prop nut zinc, it could take 20 minutes of actual in water time and an hour preparation time. If we are doing a 64' twin-screw powerboat with forward and aft thrusters, multiple shaft zincs, strut, rudder, prop nut and trim tab zincs, it could take a couple hours.
Why am I charged more for replacement of zincs if I supply the zincs?
Well folks, this is simple economics, if you supply the zinc, we loose money both by losing the sale of the zinc, and our commercial accounts with suppliers are down-graded for not having enough wholesale volume. Thus we graciously ask that you let us supply you your zincs at a cost not above normal retail. This also insures the correct size, quantity, and type of zinc as well as having it as expeditiously as possible for installation.
Can I keep or see my zincs you replaced?
Absolutely you can! We cannot however give you zincs that are no longer there which should had been there. Once a shaft or prop-nut zinc are extremely warn, they can be thrown of the shaft. It's also worth noting that improperly installed shaft zincs can have a tendency of being thrown as well. Most of the time, the zinc is there, however. And, in those cases, we can leave the zincs for you to inspect and discard, or you can inspect and we will discard them for you.
If I choose to have a zinc inspection videoed, what format and quality is the video?
The format will always be an mp4, and the quality of the video will always be in HD or higher quality. We cannot guarantee water quality at the time of filming, but we would try to wait until visibility is good enough to gain meaningfully clear video with video lights being used.
Why does the cost of inspection and replacement seem a little expensive?
Please understand that to inspect or replace your zincs requires prep time, air, and wear and tear on our equipment. Prep time to inspect, install or replace zincs can take upwards to and hour or more and includes getting gear ready, filling air-tanks, donning equipment, preparing zincs to be installed, and the ordering and physical acquiring of the parts. So, a lot more goes into it besides just our in-water time. Thank you for understanding
NOTE -- All prices are subject to change!
